Getting Started - Part 2

Now you need to pick one item - just one! Remember, you need to focus on one thing at a time.

For my example, I’ll choose music. Music is a very broad marketing term. There are a lot of types of music, musical instruments, artists, etc. You need to narrow down music (or your topic) to a single keyword. A keyword is something that a person types into a search engine (like Google or Yahoo) to find information.

For example, let’s say you’re searching for info about buying a new guitar. You’d probably go to Google and type in “guitar” and get a ton of results. But what it you’re just looking for articles or reviews on particular guitars so you can get a decent idea if it’s something you want to buy? In that case you might type in “guitar articles” or “guitar reviews.” See what we’ve done? We’ve narrowed down our keyword search. Now, when we do our search, we don’t get as many results. This is why we want to break “music” down a bit so we can narrow in on a very specific niche. You may not even use the word music in your final choice but it will be related to it in some way. In my case, I narrowed music down to “acoustic guitars.”

But that is still pretty broad. There are plenty of smaller subsets. Break the term down into the smallest area possible. In my example, I could choose “Masterbilt AJ-500M.”

Do you see where I am going with this? Take your main interest, whatever it is, and break it down as much as you can. Get it to the point where you are focusing on one VERY specific thing.

In the next chapter, we’re going to take your narrowed down “keyword phrase” and run with it.

Go on to Chapter 3
